THEMATIC ISSUE. VOLUME 19 ISSUE 1 (2026)

METHODOLOGIES AND EPISTEMOLOGIES IN SCANDINAVIAN ISLAMIC STUDIES

In this special issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Islamic Studies (SJIS), we invite high-quality research papers that address different methodological perspectives, as well as discussing their various epistemological underpinnings. The papers may be theoretically oriented or built around a case study. In addition to the methodological and epistemological perspectives, we encourage submissions on the history of the field in Scandinavia and on issues of research ethics and societal impact of concern for Islamic Studies.

In recent decades, Islamic Studies has emerged as a distinct and thriving field within Scandinavian academia. Although seldom institutionalized as an academic discipline in its own right, this field of interest brings together researchers with affiliations within a number of disciplines, as well as researchers who work interdisciplinary. Islamic Studies is here defined broadly as studies on Islam and Muslims, in Scandinavia mostly as a subset within disciplines including religious studies, area studies, theology, history, political science, anthropology, educational studies, and environmental studies, with methodological approaches ranging from sociological and ethnographic to philological and philosophical, and more. In this special issue we aim to reflect this diversity.

Given the lacuna in the textbook treatment of this field, we are particularly interested in attracting papers which are cutting edge in the ongoing discussions and at the same suitable as curriculum material. We particularly welcome contributions in the Scandinavian languages, Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian, as well as in English.
